About
My career began with a life-changing Geography degree at the University of Cambridge — for which I thank Professor Linda McDowell — followed by two years as a Parliamentary Researcher for the visionary Joan Walley MP. I then completed a PhD examining practical philosophies of environmental design, based at the University of Cambridge and as a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design.
During my doctoral studies I met artists Issam Kourbaj and Candelaria Capurro Ferrer and joined their pioneering artistic space, Group C. My decision to move into landscape practice was guided by other formative encounters with thinker-makers, including community architect Kay Jordan; Robert Loder, co-founder of the Triangle Arts Trust; and artists Nina Edge, Annetta Pedretti and, on South African soil, William Kentridge.
A part-time diploma in Landscape Architecture at the University of the West of England enabled me to combine study with work on innovative public-space initiatives in Liverpool and London. I am grateful for these experiences with the Institute of Education, the Centre for Accessible Environments, the Liverpool Architecture and Design Trust and the uplifting organisation Landlife. I also gained valuable horticultural training as a volunteer at the Chelsea Physic Garden, and encountered the profoundly inspirational artworks of Isamu Noguchi, Elizabeth Frink and Michael Andrews in the capital’s streets and galleries.
My commissioned work with public clients is broad and includes Maggie’s Cancer Care, the National Trust, the Earth Trust, Playlink, What If: Projects and a range of community-based initiatives. Collaborations with individuals offer an opportunity to attune to both human needs and the subtle composition and life of each site. Across all projects, my commitment is to respond to what cannot always be articulated in words, and to craft interventions that cultivate beauty, coherence and natural vitality.
